A data center is only as reliable as its weakest layer. Getting the early planning decisions right is far cheaper than fixing them in a live facility.
Start with the load
Estimate IT load per rack today and in three to five years. This single number drives power distribution, UPS sizing, cooling capacity and floor layout.
Power and redundancy
- Decide which failures the facility must survive — a UPS module, a utility outage, a generator fault.
- Plan dual power feeds to critical racks where equipment supports it.
- Size UPS autonomy to bridge the generator start and transfer reliably.
- Where grid supply is unstable, plan generator fuel, maintenance and testing as part of the design, not an afterthought.
Cooling and airflow
Hot-aisle/cold-aisle layouts with containment, blanking panels and sealed cable openings keep cold air where it is needed. Cooling redundancy should match your power redundancy.
Cabling that scales
Structured, labelled cabling with planned pathways makes moves, adds and changes safe. Leave capacity in trays and patch panels for growth.
Design the facility your operations team will run at 3 a.m., not just the one that looks good on opening day.
Operations and documentation
Commissioning tests, labelling standards, as-built drawings and maintenance schedules turn a build into a dependable facility.
